Betws-y-Coed Redwood Trees

Giant Sequoia Wellingtonia.

Where to find the giant Wellingtonia Sequoia in Betws-y-Coed.First of all are there any to be found? With a little bit of looking ,the first place in Betws-y-Coed to find this giant tree is in the grounds of the main church St Mary's.

Although not a magnificent specimen , the top of the tree has been damaged in the past and is missing.. However the main stem and foliage are there to be seen as shown in this pictures below. Slight tints of brown are showing on the growing tips.

Height of this tree is about 100ft and was probably planted in the 1870's .Click on the pictures to enlarge.

Close up of the foliage proves it's species and belongs to the same family of redwoods native to Northern California and National Parks.

Although individual trees can be found within a couple of miles radius of betws-y-coed, there is a magnificent redwood avenue, although not a grove in the small village of Melin y Coed

Trees very closely linked in look a like foliage and bark colour, and which can be confused as Redwoods is the Cryptomeria japonica ( Japanes Red Cedar ). The foliage is much more sparse and longer than the Wellingtonia's and are also bright glossy green.

I was lucky enough to collect some seeds from the Redwood Grove at the Henry Cowell Redwood State Park at Felton California in December 2006. Not knowing exactly which species they were until I sowed them in February 2007 and waited for germination. I now have 5 Coastal Redwood seedlings about 2-3 inches high, September 2007
